The Higgins Bedford

The Higgins Bedford unites on one site three previous cultural venues : Cecil Higgins Art Gallery, Bedford Museum and Bedford Gallery. The buildings themselves date back 200 years and have their own rich history of occupation and use, even before they became used for their more recent cultural past.

The Higgins Bedford has been refitted throughout. Visitors can enjoy watercolour, print and decorative art collections of international significance, including major collections of works by William Burges and Edward Bawden. Local collections tell the story of Bedford and its people through archaeological finds, natural history, geology and social history. Important too are small but significant world archaeology and ethnography collections.

The Keep Military Museum

The Keep Military Museum is housed in an imposing Portland Stone building on the western side of Dorchester – just look for the castle! We attract all ages and are will be introducing more family and children’s activities over the coming months. We appeal to the family historian, the military historian, the local historian – indeed anyone with an interest in history and heritage. We aim to educate, to inspire and also to honour the sacrifices made by the members of our Regiments. Our displays cover four floors and include uniforms, weapons, silverware, painings, badges, personal artefacts, photographs, documents and a splendid collection of medals. Wherever possible to we try to tell the human story behind the exhibit. Check out our First World War Officer’s Dug-Out and Other Ranks bunk-room for a taste of life in the trenches too. It’s also worth going up on our roof for views all around Dorchester and the surrounding countryside – information boards tell you what you are looking at.

The Edinburgh Dungeon

The Edinburgh Dungeon brings together an amazing cast of theatrical actors, special effects, stages, scenes and rides in a truly unique and exciting walkthrough experience that you see, hear, touch, smell and feel. It’s hilarious fun and it’s sometimes a bit scary.

The Edinburgh Dungeon is an 80 minute journey through 1000 years of Scotland’s horrible history. Tours leave around 10 minutes apart and guided by a full cast of actors, you and your companions then move from show to show. You will laugh and scream as you encounter gripping storytelling, exciting rides and thrilling special effects. It’s based on real history and legend (minus the boring bits) where you come face-to-face with sinister characters from Scotland’s gruesome past, including murderous twosome Burke and Hare and the Scottish Legend Sawney Bean. Experience the disastrous effects of the plague in Street of Sorrows, the fearsome torture chamber and even a mysterious Boat Ride through the Caves of Galloway.

It’s a fully themed experience. That means 360° sets, full on authenticity and theatrical storytelling. On your journey you’ll pass through the Caves of Galloway, plague-ravaged closes, the fearsome torture chamber… and might even get a hanging for your crimes on our Drop Dead ride. Believe us, it’s better than a sightseeing or boring museum tour of Edinburgh.
