The Higgins Bedford

The Higgins Bedford unites on one site three previous cultural venues : Cecil Higgins Art Gallery, Bedford Museum and Bedford Gallery. The buildings themselves date back 200 years and have their own rich history of occupation and use, even before they became used for their more recent cultural past.

The Higgins Bedford has been refitted throughout. Visitors can enjoy watercolour, print and decorative art collections of international significance, including major collections of works by William Burges and Edward Bawden. Local collections tell the story of Bedford and its people through archaeological finds, natural history, geology and social history. Important too are small but significant world archaeology and ethnography collections.

Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery

Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery is Carlisle’s finest visitor attraction, and houses considerable collections of fine and decorative art, human history and natural sciences. It also boasts a wide range of exhibitions and events, brought together in one impressive museum and art gallery.

Being the premier attraction in the North West means that Tullie House is recognised for its first class customer service, and for exciting, varied events and exhibitions programmes.

A fusion of old and new awaits you, from the beautiful Old Tullie House, a classical Grade One Listed Jacobean building to the Border Galleries, full of exciting exhibits and interactive displays.

There is something for everyone at Tullie House. Children and adults of all ages will find fun, hands-on exhibits and even games: fire a Roman weapon, climb our life-sized section of Hadrian’s Wall or visit the badgers’ sett!.

A changing programme of temporary exhibitions compliments our permanent displays; contemporary arts are featured in the purpose-built Art Gallery, and exhibitions inspired by our own collections or the local community appear in the Special Exhibitions Gallery upstairs.

In the main displays we will take you on a journey through the ages, from the present day back to the Romans and before. You will also encounter Wildlife of the Eden valley (set under a changing audio-visual ceiling display) and local history over the past century in the new Carlisle Life gallery.

Set in attractive and well-planted gardens, Old Tullie House (1689) still retains its beautiful Jacobean facade. Inside there is an impressive Jacobean staircase and fireplace. The wood-panelled first floor room shows Pre-Raphaelite art and Arts & Crafts items.

The award-winning family-friendly restaurant serves a variety of snacks and meals, while the Tullie House gift shop is the perfect place to find unique gifts and souvenirs, featuring locally crafted goods.

Tullie House is the perfect setting for weddings. The Victorian Theatre with its impressive bridal entrance has tiered seating for 100. For those looking for a more intimate wedding, the Morning Room, overlooking the Abbey Street gardens, can accommodate a wedding party of up to 30.

Penwith Gallery

The Penwith is a society of exhibiting artists and has a unique complex of buildings, including public galleries, artist studios, workshops and a coffee bar.

The Penwith Society was founded in 1949 by a group of artists in St. Ives, under the distinguished leadership of Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth and Bernard Leach.

For the first ten years, work was displayed in rented premises in Fore Street, St. Ives, and its seasonal exhibitions became a national showplace for contemporary painting, sculpture and the crafts.

In 1960, the present site, then a pilchard-packing factory, was acquired and converted into a gallery, with artists’ studios above. In 1970 adjacent property became available, and the artist members, assisted by Barbara Hepworth, sought funds to create the present group of galleries, studios and workshops. To take on the task of maintaining its buildings and workshops, to arrange the programme of exhibitions and execute the gallery business the Penwith Galleries Ltd. was created. This is now a management body and a public charity.

It now presents a full programme of exhibitions by members and associates of the society, together with featured exhibitions by artists from Cornwall and elsewhere.

Fosse Gallery Fine Art

Still in its splendid original Cotswold location in the Manor House on the Square, Stow on the Wold – no privately run art gallery in the Cotswolds has been established in the same place for longer – it is often described as one of the most important UK art galleries outside London. Founded in 1980, it has handled some of the most prestigious contemporary British artists in the last thirty years.

Founded by Gerard O’Farrell and Brian Sinfield, the UK gallery began by selling Victorian watercolours before establishing its reputation in the Modern British field. By the mid 1980’s a great partnership had been established between Don Steyn and O’Farrell.

In 2006 Sharon acquired the Fosse Gallery. Working increasingly closely to build the gallery’s relationship with the Royal Academy she has staged many major exhibitions for the RA out of London, as well as curating retrospectives for William Gear, RA and Richard Eurich, RA. Her specially themed exhibitions and One Man Shows are invariably well received. She is now recognised as running one of the few specialist galleries offering the work of Royal Academicians and established artists in a rural setting, with well-attended private views. Her knowledge and expertise is reflected in her regular contributions to arts magazines and papers.

With hundreds of exhibitions under her belt, Sharon has handled and exhibits some of the most prestigious contemporary British art since 1997 of investment quality and international standing while also offering art at fair prices and guidance to collectors.
